Where to eat near Playacar
In Playacar, eat at Perché No, Italian pizza and pasta at about MXN 310–500 a person. The lighter meal nearby is Mu. Burgerhouse on Avenida 40, about MXN 250–350.

That is the answer Glenn gives when a guest asks, on the first night, where they should eat without turning dinner into a project. Playacar is quiet after dark. The houses are inside a gate. Fifth Avenue is close enough for a planned night out and far enough that you do not want to depend on it every evening. A good week here is a mix: two or three meals that never leave the neighborhood, and two or three that are worth the walk or the short ride into town.
The meals that stay in Playacar
Perché No is the neighborhood Italian. It sits in Playacar, which matters more than the menu when you have tired children, a late arrival from the airport, or a group that has already spent the day in the pool. Fresh pasta, a proper oven, and pizzas that stay in the MXN 150–200 range. A full sitting is about MXN 310–500 a person. Order pizza if you want the lower end. Order pasta and a second plate if you are settling in.
Off The Vine is the other Playacar table worth knowing, and it is a different mood. It is a wine bar with food made for sharing: tapas, pizza, cheese, and jamón. A glass stays modest. A plate of ibérico does not. Budget about MXN 300–500 a person and then decide, before you sit down, whether the table is going to share one expensive plate or several modest ones. It is the right room when the house is full and nobody wants a steakhouse, but nobody wants a burger either.
If the group has already decided that nobody is dressing for dinner, leave the gate and go to Mu. Burgerhouse on Avenida 40. Smash burgers, a casual room, about MXN 250–350 a person. It is the easy meal. Glenn sends people there when the day was long and the only requirement is that the food arrives and the room does not feel like an occasion.
Pizza and trattorias in town
Once you are willing to go into the center, the Italian options split by how much of a restaurant you want.
Casa Sofia, in the center, is pizza first. Classics sit near MXN 195, and the richer pies climb toward MXN 295. Go there when the decision is already “pizza,” not when someone at the table wants a long Italian dinner.
Romeo is a trattoria on Calle 4, between 10th and 15th Avenue. Handmade pasta and pizza, about MXN 300–500 a person, with a check that still feels fair. It is the middle of the list on purpose. You can take a mixed group — one person who wants pasta, one who wants pizza — without stepping up into steakhouse money.
Osteria de Roma, on Calle 6, is a sit-down Italian, not a pizza counter. Antipasti start near MXN 220, and a shared antipasto board is the expensive opener. Mains are mostly MXN 250–500. If you only want pizza, you are in the wrong room and you will feel it on the bill. If you want a proper dinner that is still short of a celebration, this is the one.
Fifth Avenue, when the beach is the point
Po Thai is on Quinta Avenida. Wok plates: pad thai, curries, and dumplings. Mains are about MXN 370–440, and one main is a meal. It is the useful Fifth Avenue reservation when the group does not want another Italian night and does not want to commit to steak. You are paying a bit more than the Playacar trattorias because you are on the avenue. You are not paying Harry’s money.
Zenzi Beach is at the beach end of Quinta Avenida. The honest description is a long lunch, not a steakhouse bill. Feet in the sand. Come for the beach as much as the plate. Glenn does not quote a peso range for it, because the point of the table is the afternoon, not a prix-fixe. Go when the plan is to stay. Do not go when someone needs to be back at the house in forty minutes.
The steak nights, in order of the bill
This is where groups get surprised, so the order matters. The list runs from the grill that is still a normal night to the room you book because it is the occasion.
Bendita Costilla, on Avenida 30, is Argentine: ribs and the parrilla. The bill steps up from the trattorias and stays short of Harry’s. Glenn does not publish an exact peso band, and that is deliberate. Call it a steak night that is still below the big rooms. Choose it when the table wants meat and does not want Fifth Avenue theater.
500 Gramos is north of town. Grill and Italian plates, off the tourist strip. A steak dinner without the Quinta Avenida markup. Again, the prices are steakhouse prices, kept more local. It is the drive you make when the house has a car and the group is tired of the avenue.
Bovinos Steakhouse is at Calle 12 and 10th Avenue. This one has a number: about MXN 490–1,000 a person. It is a full steakhouse, with seafood on the same menu. A planned dinner, not a walk-in pizza. If the table is going to order steak and a second bottle, assume the top of that range, not the bottom.
Alux is the cave west of town. Dinner in a cave. Mexican and seafood plates, and you are paying for the room as much as the food. Mains are often MXN 350–750, and a New York steak on the menu is MXN 1,300. Go because you want to eat underground. Do not go because you are hunting the cheapest steak in Playa.
Harry’s Steakhouse & Raw Bar, on Quinta Avenida, is the expensive night. Steak and a raw bar, MXN 1,000 and up a person. It is for a celebration rather than a Tuesday. If someone in the group has been saying “we should do one serious dinner,” this is that dinner. If they have been saying “we should keep it easy,” send them back to Perché No or Mu.
How Glenn would actually book the week
Night one, after the airport: Perché No, because it is in Playacar and the pizzas stay in a range you can predict.
A night when the house cannot agree: Mu, or Casa Sofia if they have already agreed on pizza.
A night when the adults want to sit longer: Off The Vine if they are staying inside the gate, Romeo or Osteria de Roma if they want town.
A beach afternoon that turns into lunch: Zenzi.
One steak night for the whole trip: Bendita Costilla or 500 Gramos if the budget is still ordinary, Bovinos if they want the full room, Alux if the cave is the memory, Harry’s if the night is the celebration.
The prices above are what Glenn quotes. A holiday week can run hotter, and a shared ibérico plate or a New York steak will not sit inside the “about” range. The full list, in the same order, is on the restaurants page.
